Installation
Run Dashcam locally from source and verify Claude Code recording.
Install Dashcam locally
Dashcam currently runs from source. It records Claude Code hook and transcript events in a local SQLite database and serves a dashboard at http://127.0.0.1:57580. Screenshot capture is optional and needs Playwright plus a reachable development server. Video recording is deferred.
Before you start
Install Bun 1.2 or newer and Claude Code. You need access to the Dashcam source repository. Dashcam has not been published as an npm package, so use the source commands below rather than npx dashcam.
Set up the recorder
git clone https://github.com/aylith-labs/dashcam.git
cd dashcam
bun install
bun bin/dashcam.ts init
bun run build
bun bin/dashcam.ts startOpen http://127.0.0.1:57580. Run Claude Code normally, then return to Dashcam to review the recorded session.
init installs fire-and-forget Claude Code hooks in ~/.claude/settings.json and prepares ~/.dashcam/ for the SQLite database and captures. The daemon binds to 127.0.0.1 by default. It is a local, single-user tool; do not expose it on a public interface without your own access controls.
Enable screenshots
From the Dashcam checkout, install Chromium for Playwright:
bunx playwright install chromiumWhen a configured tool event occurs, Dashcam checks for a reachable development server and the minimum capture interval. It may skip a screenshot when those prerequisites are absent, the screen is unchanged, or capture fails. Events remain available even without screenshots.
Check the setup
bun bin/dashcam.ts doctor
bun bin/dashcam.ts statusdoctor reports hook, database, capture, and daemon health. If you already have Claude Code transcripts and want to bring them into the local database, run bun bin/dashcam.ts import.
The --loki, --ecc, --squad, and init --remote flags are accepted by the CLI but their bridges and remote setup are not active yet. Video recording is also deferred.
Stop or remove Dashcam
bun bin/dashcam.ts stop
bun bin/dashcam.ts uninstalluninstall removes Dashcam's hooks while keeping recorded data. Add --delete-data only if you intentionally want to remove ~/.dashcam/ and its recordings.
